Quirky Events

England is renowned for it's unusual traditions, but some of the annual events that take place across the East Midlands have to be seen to be believed.
These quirky events are something that could only take place in England and many can be traced back hundreds of years, some are even events that have been revived, and others are brand new and celebrate the fun loving spirit of those living in the East Midlands.

Why not tie in your visit with one of these truly unusual and throughly exciting events taking place in the East Midlands.

World Conker Championships

Visit the ancient town of Oundle in Northamptonshire to enjoy one of the most unusual world championships!  Conkers – the fruit of the horse chestnut tree are tied to a string and opponents take it in turns to ‘bash’ each others’ conker.  With stalls, entertainment and competitions, this charity event promises unusual fun for everyone!

Shrovetide Football

Traditionally played at Easter time, this is a very different kind of football match.  Teams consist of one hundred people each and the pitch is three miles wide, with the town of Ashbourne in the middle!  The game can last for many hours, finishing well after dark.

Robin Hood Festival

Live like the famous outlaw at the RH festival!  Enjoy medieval entertainment, games and food.  Walk through Sherwood Forest and imagine life as Robin and his band of merry men, robbing from the rich and giving to the poor.

World Hen Racing Championships

In the small Derbyshire town of Bonsall an intriguing race takes place every year, intriguing in that the participants are chickens!  The World Championship Hen Races was re-established 16 years ago at the Barley Mow pub. Come and watch as the competitors encourage their prize chickens across the finish line.
